How ecommerce profit, margin and ROAS work

Net profit

Net profit is what's left from each order after product cost, shipping, payment fees, advertising and other costs. A positive number means each sale earns money; a negative number means each sale loses money.

Profit margin (not markup)

Profit margin is net profit as a percentage of order revenue. Markup is different: it compares profit to cost, not to revenue. A 30% margin means you keep 30 cents of every dollar a customer pays.

Break-even CPA and ROAS

Break-even CPA is the most you can spend on ads to get one order without losing money. ROAS (return on ad spend) is revenue divided by ad spend. It isn't the same as ROI, which measures profit against investment. If your actual ROAS is above your break-even ROAS, your ads are profitable at these numbers.
